A Little Compromise – To Make Our Nature Rise
Saseena Parajuli
Simply environment is the surrounding we live. It is obvious that the type of environment we are living decides about existence. As environment has fulfilled our every desires, we do have much responsibilities towards our nature. These days COVID-19 pandemic has played an efficient role in the protection of environment. Not only the Nature, being the most intelligent creature, we, humans must make a little compromise- to make our nature rise. The article is all about it.
Nature and Environment:
Nature is the natural world which endows natural qualities; personified as a creative and controlling force affecting the world and humans while Environment surrounds and envelopes us. It keeps a close check on the environment and its functioning, regulates the vital system essential for the ecosystem, and maintains the culture and quality of life on earth.
Human beings depend heavily on environment as it supports life in array of ways, it regulates various natural cycles which help in maintaining the natural balance between living things and the environment, helps humans and other living beings to flourish and grow from thousands of years and provides us fertile land, water, air, livestock and many essential things for survival. However, because of various reasons, human activities weigh heavily on the quality of our environment.
Environmental issues are becoming more serious and dangerous as many environmental problems are surrounding people in everyday life which people never paid attention to it. It can be seen by long ecological effects which can demolish whole environment. Global warming, air pollution, contamination on land and water, acid rain, ozone depletion, energy and water deficits are some of the major environmental issues which have challenged humanity and its progress. Thus, it is very important for human beings to be more pensive towards the environment that we live in.
Current Scenario : Environmental Degradation
Our environment is deteriorating for last two centuries and almost every part of the planet is touched by it. Environmental degradation is the result of deterioration of environmental system through the depletion of resources such as air, water and soil, the destruction of ecosystems, extinction of wildlife, habitat destruction and pollution due to human intervention.
The primary cause of environmental degradation is human disturbance such as wrong agricultural practices, filling lands with waste materials from factories, industries and houses while the modern technological progress is the root cause. However, humans are not totally to be blamed as the earth itself causes an ecological issue which also brings destruction to the earth such as earthquake, avalanches and volcanic erruption.
COVID-19 Pandemic, A Boon For The Environment:
Following the outbreak of COVID-19, many countries have adopted lockdown procedures that stopped people from moving out and all other establishments to close down. The nature has been healing itself while we are locked down inside our homes. Before the pandemic, the air around us had been very toxic to breathe due to the greenhouse gases that had been emitted over a centuries.
After the lockdown was put in many countries, with many factories and business closed, there was lesser travelling done by people; fewer cars on the road and fewer planes in the sky which led to the pollution in the air dropping significantly as there is a decline in nitrous oxide emission and our environment is recovering significantly.
Likewise, water quality has been improved in various famous cities of the world since there were no boats and plying on the rivers and waterways. In Venice, water quality has improved with a clear view of shoals of small fish, crabs and multi colored plants. Animals have been spotted moving about freely where once they would not dare to go. Even sea turtles have been spotted returning to areas they once avoided to lay their eggs. Pandas mate in lockdown after 10 years in Hong kong zoo. Boars were spotted in Barcelona and a wild puma was captured wandering around the China’s capital. There are reports that citizens from Northern India are seeing the view of Himalayas range for the first time after World War II.
Ganges water being sparkling clean, ozone layer sealing, air quality index improving significantly, birds singing in our cities, animals coming out of hiding and roaming on the streets are some the changes we are seeing in the nature during this pandemic.
A Little Compromise – To Make Our Nature Rise ???
It’s high time for human beings to start saving our Mother Nature as she is giving us many chances to revive our environment. Instead of prioritizing the environmental issues, we, human beings are degrading the environment more and more by throwing gloves, masks and plastic in the oceans during this pandemic without thinking about the future consequences. We are cutting down the forest rapidly and killing wild animals brutally while the whole world is suffering.
However, not all of us are revolutionaries but we can do our small contribution to our mother nature. Can’t we contribute to mother nature just by being eco-friendly? Can’t we stop killing wildlife and stop destroying their habitat? Can’t we be more responsible human beings and clean up after ourselves? Can’t we stop throwing garbage in the rivers or ocean and land? Can’t we stop wasting food or feed that stray instead of throwing it in the trash? Can’t we stop wasting water? Can’t we use a little less paper? Can’t we recycle or reuse? Can’t we plant the seed of the fruit we just ate? Can’t we all learn to co-exist with all forms of nature with a bit more responsibility? Can’t we try to convert our balcony into a garden? Can’t we keep a bucket of water outside our house for birds and animals?
We can all play our parts, assume our responsibilities and do our bit.
