Lucky Bamboo Plant: Meaning and Care

Lucky Bamboo Plant is a common house plant (Dracaena sanderiana) which is very easy to care and grows well in indirect sunlight. It is not a real bamboo. 1. Fill the container with enough filtered water to cover the roots and change the water in every 7 to 10 days. Clean the pebbles and container as well.

2. Lucky bamboo loves bright indirect sunlight. So, do not keep it in direct sunlight.

3. It thrives in temperature between 65-95o F. During winter months, don’t place lucky bamboo near windows.

4. Remove any yellow leaves if seen in your plants.

5. Distilled or filtered water should be used as fluoride or chlorine in tap water can cause the green tips of the leaves to burn or turn brown.

Common Problems and Solutions

1. Lucky Bamboo Turning Yellow

It may be because of too much fertilizer, too much chlorine or fluoride in water or too much sun.

Solution: Avoid using fertilizer or use distilled or filtered water and keep the plant in bright indirect sunlight.

2. Fungal infections and Pests

Pests like mealybugs, mites and fungal infection can affect the lucky bamboo.

Solution: If you notice grey fuzz on your plant, remove the infected stalk. Keep the stalk and leaves dry and increase air circulation. Pests should be removed by rubbing alcohol.

Cautions: It is toxic for cats and dogs. So, keep it out of reach.
